Sri Lanka’s South Coast covers a vast region from Galle to Tangalle in the deep south. The coastal towns in between including Habaraduwa, Koggala, Weligama, Ahangama, Mirissa, Hiriketiya, and Tangalle covers a picturesque region with crescent shaped bays; sundrenched beaches, rural fishing villages, untouched wilderness, and a vibrant cultural heritage. Travelling from the international airport, the South Coast is easily accessed via the Southern Expressway. The best time to visit this region is between November to April when the seas are in season and is safe for swimming and surfing.
Galle holds fond memories for many. Strolling along cobblestone roadways at Galle Fort; feasting on sumptuous seafood dinner under a star filled sky at Unawatuna Bay; meandering along the tranquil Koggala Lake, and so much more makes people return time and again to this quaint coastal town. Beyond Galle is Ahangama, Weligama, Mirissa, Hiriketiya and Tangalle where surfers ride the waves and enjoy barefoot living by the sea. Mirissa is well known for the gigantic Blue Whales that are found off the coast. The South Coast is dotted with beachside cafes, restaurants, guesthouse, beach villas and boutique hotels.
Further into the deep south from Kalametiya to Yala National Park is untouched wilderness where numerous species of resident and migrant birds flock, and elephants, leopard, sloth bear and so much more, roam free.
Buckingham Place is situated in the remote coastal village of Rekawa fronting a wilderness beach where endangered marine turtles come ashore to nest. This secluded and laid back beachside hotel feels more like a homestay where guests are provided a personalised and caring service.
